Artists statement 2026
In the world we live in today, the concept of “our land” and our ties to it have become increasingly important. At the same time, as society becomes ever more centred around cities, technology, and viewing the world through screens, our connection to the landscape and our sense of identity within it continue to diminish.
In my practice i make work as a celebration of a landscape that is often overlooked and regarded as having little value. The boglands of Ireland, particularly those of Counties Wicklow and Leitrim, are at the heart of my practice. Through printmaking, I explore these richly textured terrains, seeking to capture the fleeting atmospheric moments that define a sense of place.
My work centres on moments when sudden shifts in light or weather transform the ordinary into something beautiful and extraordinary, while also suggesting a sense of menace and vulnerability. Through colour, texture, and the material qualities of printmaking, I aim to evoke these moods and sensations.
The small scale of the prints is a deliberate contrast to the vastness of the landscape itself. These are not grand or dramatic scenes, but rather quiet intervals charged with stillness and tension. By drawing attention to these subtle moments, I hope to encourage a deeper appreciation of a landscape that is both fragile and enduring, familiar yet often overlooked.
In engaging with these works, I invite viewers to reconnect not only with the land itself, but also with a part of themselves—the memories, histories, and sense of identity that are rooted in place and often lie just beneath the surface.
